Introducing a swath of new rules isn’t easy – and explains why the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has issued clarifications – and fixed published errors – about the changes being made to the driving test booking system.
Already profiled here, there are several key changes coming down the road:
The Changing Booking Rule
From 31 March (yes, tomorrow), the number of times you can change your driving test booking is being cut from six times down to two.
The problem? Some learners were worried if their driving test was changed due to, say, bad weather, this would count as an official booking change.
The fix? The DVSA has said that any changes to a driving test that it makes will not count against the new two-change limit – so no need to fret.
The Booking Access Restriction Rule
From 12 May, it will be a legal requirement that only learners can book or change their test – not the driving instructor.
The problem? Questions were raised about what the actual role of the instructor is now within the new system and how they are supposed to know if the booking will work for their own scheduling.
The fix? The DVSA has underlined that instructors can still support learners during the booking process if they need assistance. Also, instructors can set their availability in the system so it can check the instructor’s schedule immediately and black out any times and dates where the instructor is not free.
The Test Swap Rule
From 12 May, you can still swap your test with another learner – but without the risk of being defrauded.
The problem? Learners were understandably concerned about sharing their private information such as a provisional driving licence number with someone who is a complete stranger. And they were right to worry as numerous social media scams have shown such information being used for identity theft.
The fix? The DVSA is removing the risk by ensuring all swaps are conducted in a secure environment provided by the agency itself. The days of having to give your details to a stranger will soon be gone for good – and that can’t come soon enough.
The ‘Nearest Three’ Rule
This new rule applies to learners who want to change the location of their driving test. Currently, you can move your test to any centre in the country. However, from 9 June onwards, you will only be able to move a booked test to one of the three test centres nearest your original booking.
The problem? The DVSA made a bit of a hash of which test centres you could actually move to. For instance, the agency calculated distances between available centres in a straight line, not taking into consideration the actual route – and subsequent mileage or time required to get there. Also, it featured neighbouring test centres that were not actually ones closest to the test centre for the original booking.
The fix? These errors have now been corrected with approximate driving distances now included, not a ‘straight line’ – you can see the full updates list by clicking here. Also, if you booked a test for 9 June or later, you should have received an email from the DVSA detailing the corrections if your booking has been affected. If you didn’t, check your Junk folder.
