For those living in the new Tier 4 areas, all driver education has been stopped – or is about to. Here’s how it breaks down country by country:

Tier 4 Restrictions on Practical Driving Tests & Theory Tests

England – Driving and theory tests can still take place in areas in Tiers 1, 2 and 3 but all types of driving test are suspended in areas in Tier 4. The affected areas are:

  • Greater London (all 32 boroughs and the City of London); Kent; Buckinghamshire (including Milton Keynes); Berkshire; Surrey (excluding Waverley); Gosport, Havant and Portsmouth; Rother and Hastings; Bedfordshire; Hertfordshire; Essex (excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring); and Peterborough.

Scotland – Driving and theory tests are taking place in areas in protection levels 0, 1, 2 and 3. All types of driving test are to be suspended in areas in protection level 4, which is being introduced on Boxing Day (26th December). Check out the full list of affected areas here.

Wales – Driving and theory tests can take place in areas in alert levels 1, 2 and 3. Driving tests (except for motorcycle tests and tractor tests) and theory tests are suspended in areas in alert level 4. As all of Wales is currently in alert level 4, driver education is now suspended across the country.

You must not travel out of a level 4 area to take your test somewhere else.

Tier 4 Restrictions on Driving Lessons

England – Driving lessons and motorcycle training can take place in areas in Tiers 1, 2 and 3. Instructors must not provide driving lessons and motorcycle training in areas in Tier 4 unless it’s with someone from their household during an essential journey.

Scotland – Driving lessons and motorcycle training can take place in areas in protection levels 0, 1, 2 and 3. Instructors must not provide driving lessons or motorcycle training in areas in protection level 4 unless it’s with someone from their household during an essential journey.

Wales – Driving lessons and motorcycle training will be able to take place in areas in alert levels 1, 2 and 3. Instructors must not provide driving lessons (except for motorcycle training and tractor training) in areas in alert level 4 unless it’s with someone from their household during an essential journey.

Instructors must not travel out of a Tier 4 area to teach somewhere else.
