A new study has revealed that most experienced drivers would fail the theory test if they sat down and took it today.
Judging from ADI feedback in our recent Parents: Friend or Foe blog, it’s a common complaint from some parents that learning to drive takes too much time and money; that they would sail through in double time. But a new study by Churchill Insurance has revealed that two thirds of experienced drivers would fail the theory test if they took it now.
As part of a study carried out by the insurance company, 50 experienced drivers took the two-part theory test with 66% failing overall; over a third (34%) failed the hazard perception test while half flunked the multiple choice questions segment. Worryingly, the biggest road block to passing the multiple choice were questions about road and traffic signs with questions about accidents and vehicle handling tailgating into second place.
An inability to read the road properly often leads to hesitant and unsafe driving behaviours, so we’d urge all road users to regularly brush up on their knowledge of road signs and regulation.”
– Steve Barrett, Churchill Car Insurance.
And UK motorists agree with Barrett, it seems – additional research by Churchill found that 53% of Brtiain’s drivers believe that it should be compulsory for motorists to re-take the theory test after a certain number of years to ensure their knowledge of the road remains current.
