We’ve already profiled the big changes coming to how you book your test this Tuesday, 12 May – you can check out that blog post here. But what happens if you want to swap your test date with another learner?
There are strict new rules surrounding that as well. First, only you, as the learner, will be able to initiate a swap. Previously, instructors – and more significantly – third-party apps could act as the middlemen for making the swap.
Popular but problematic
While such services proved popular with some learners, the practice contributed heavily to inflated waiting times and reduced availability for everyone.
From 12 May, only you and the learner you want to swap your date with will be permitted to make the change. It’s important to note that if anyone else attempts to do this on your behalf, it will be officially considered “breaking the law”.
It’s also vital to remember that the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has tightened other areas of driving test booking.
For example, the number of times you can change your test details – including the date/time, test centre and swaps – has now been reduced to two, down from the previous limit of six.
Coming next month
There is one final change being introduced as part of the DVSA’s reforms regarding where you can move your test. Under the current rules, you can move your appointment to any test centre in the country.
This has led to learners flocking from busy test centres in their area to ones hundreds of miles away that can offer an earlier slot.
For instance, we previously covered the story of Kate Copland from Aberdeen who, frustrated by local waiting lists, made a 1,000-mile round trip to just take her theory test in London.
However, such ‘test centre tourism’ will soon become a thing of the past. On June 9, you’ll only be able to move your test between three test centres in your local area.
The combined aim of all these changes is simple – to create a fairer, more transparent system that prioritises genuine learners over automated bots and bulk-buying apps and ultimately, to drive down waiting times for everyone.
