More instructors than ever are offering mock tests to their students. And that’s good news because research shows that you are 1.4 times more likely to pass your driving test if you take part in a realistic mock test.

Better still, a new survey conducted by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reveals that almost 1 in 5 instructors now either use, offer or encourage learners to take a mock test more regularly than before.

Also, 1 in 5 instructors have seen requests for mock tests from learners increase in the three months prior to the survey.

Successful campaign

The uptick in interest from both instructors and learners is believed to be down to the DVSA’s recent Ready to Pass? campaign, which helps both instructors and students check if the learner is genuinely ready for their test.

The campaign included publishing in-depth guidance to instructors on how best to conduct mock tests to help familiarise learners with what to expect during their official test. And according to the survey, the campaign is paying off.

No mocking matter

The DVSA’s survey findings reveal that:

  • 97% of ADIs offer mock tests to either their pupils or pupils of other instructors
  • 84% of ADIs offer mock tests to all their pupils; that’s an increase of 3% on the results in a mock test survey carried out in 2019
  • 96% of ADIs think it is important that mocks are representative of the real test; an increase of 7% from the 2019 survey
  • 19% of ADIs who offer mock tests offer them more frequently after the DVSA’s guidance, and 2% offer mocks when they did not previously.

Holding out

It’s worth noting that not all instructors think mock tests are helpful. Our previous blog about mocks highlighted their objections and the DVSA’s survey shows these still exist. For instance, when asked why instructors don’t offer mock tests:

  • 60% said they think mock tests are pointless
  • 13% think mocks do more harm than good
  • 11% are more focused on safe driving for life – not just passing a test
  • 7% lack confidence to conduct a mock
  • 5% do not think it’s their job.

Right approach

While some instructors object to mock tests, improving your chances of pass are essential as the pandemic lead to it increased driving test waiting times. It means passing first time is now more important than ever to avoid another long wait for a retest.

Importantly, a mock test can also assess whether you are ready to book or take your driving test. Just as important, doing a mock test helps familiarise you with what to expect on the big day so you are more prepared, plus it can help quash nerves.

If you feel you would benefit from a mock test, ask your instructor if they offer them and when they think you should have one – or even two – to check in on your progress.
