Insurer Direct Line has released a new app that rewards safe driving with free goodies and days out. Tempted?

Out on iPhone and Android, the Shotgun app is free and uses your phone’s GPS technology to monitor your day-to-day driving, judging you on your speed and braking skills on each and every journey over a 1,000 mile period (that’s on average about six months of driving for most of us). The app then scores you for each discipline, offers feedback for improving your driving – if it deems you need it – and gives you the opportunity to earn points based on your overall performance that can be used at outlets including Starbucks, Pizza Express and Virgin Experience Days.

Earn enough points and you can claim free goodies such as a:

• £5 Starbucks gift card • Pizza Express meal and drink • Smoothie at Boost • American Muscle Car Experience.

Cleverly, the app also allows you to hook up with friends and compare your points in a (safe) race to claim the top spot. Best of all, you don’t need to have a policy with the insurer to take part – you only need to be between the ages of 17 and 25 to take part.

Direct Line has launched the app because it believes that getting the message of safe driving across across to you is achieved more successfully through rewarding good driving rather than scaring you witless with videos of, say, crashed cars. After all, according to Direct Line’s own stats, 402 teen car drivers were killed or seriously injured on our roads in 2015 – that equates to seven 17 to 19-year-olds a week – and the insurer reckons something needs to be done about it. And we agree – so download the app now. Oh, and we’ll have an American Hot please.
