After being caught doing 101mph, an Audi R8 driver decided to challenge the police about the accuracy of their in-car speed camera – and ended up paying a hefty price.

Cheshire-based David Pickup was stopped by North Wales police for speeding in his Audi R8 on the way to his holiday home. The officers stated that Pickup was doing 101mph but the driver denied the speed, asking the officers “can we call it 98mph?” before calling into question the accuracy of their in-car speed camera.

Cue the prosecution hiring an airfield and a R8 and conducting its own tests; the resulting data was enough to convince magistrates that Pickup was guilty as charged and that he would not only be fined £675 but should also cover the prosecution’s costs for hiring the R8 and said airfield in the first place.

The final cost to Pickup? A whopping £10,384. The only silver lining for the speeder? Pickup had a mere six points added to his licence, avoiding an outright ban because of the substantial fine. Our advice? If you are caught speeding, take responsibility for your heavy right foot – and don’t waste the police and court’s time… or your own money.
