While signs are designed to help us understand what’s coming up on the road ahead, in reality, some can confuse more than help us. That’s according to Car Finance 247 that has put together a list of signs causing some serious head scratching among UK drivers:

1. Minimum speed

We’re used to maximum speed signs but how about minimum speeds? This sign displays the speed we shouldn’t fall below so traffic can keep flowing – so long as road conditions allow it, i.e., if there’s thick snow on the road, then of course it’s okay to slow down below the minimum speed!

2. Vehicles may pass either side to reach same destination

This sign might suggest the road is about to branch and head off in two different directions. However, it actually means you can go in either direction and you’ll still reach the same destination.

3. Overhead electric cable

For those of us driving a tall vehicle, be wary whenever you see this sign as it means there are electrified overhead cables that might make contact with you.

4. T-junction with priority over vehicles from the right

This is perhaps one of the most confusing and convoluted signs at first glance. However, it simply means you are on the main road, approaching a T-junction, and have priority over those coming from the right who must give way to you. That said, always keep your eyes peeled because those coming from the right may not be paying attention…

5. No vehicles

This may look like the council forgot to finish the sign – but really means no vehicle including cars, motorbikes and even bicycles are allowed. The exception? You can push, not ride, your bike through the zone. Also bear in mind that the restriction may not be in place 24/7 so look out for signage displaying the times it is active.

6. Two-way traffic crosses one-way road

Found on one-way streets, this sign indicates the road is about to end, intersecting with a road with two-way traffic. That means you need to get ready to turn left or right.

7. Risk of grounding

If you’re operating a heavy goods vehicle, the sign is there to warn you of a structure up ahead (such as a humpback bridge or level crossing) that you could scrape the underside of your vehicle on. This could lead to getting stuck and damaging your truck. Regular car drivers need not worry – unless they’re towing a caravan or trailer.
